Mason Greenwood. The Next Messi? Revving Up The Hype Machine!
CNN just carried an article of the young talent Mason Greenwood being compared to Lionel Messi. He has no shortage of admirers:
Former England captain Alan Shearer has said Greenwood could usurp him as the EPL’s record scorer. According to former Liverpool player and now football pundit Jamie Redknapp, those at United who have worked with the teenager say he’s one of the best the club has ever seen, while another former England star, Gary Lineker, has said it “won’t be long” until Greenwood is selected by England manager Gareth Southgate. The list of admirers seems endless.
With the hype machine being cranked up, I had never seen the United representative and had to take a look. As the video shows, he is indeed fluent. He;s quick, dribbles well and kicks with both feet. Did not see any headers but then again, if the yardstick is Messi…he won’t have to score too many of those to measure up.
Impressive indeed but for some reason, I am still not sure I like the EPL and remain convinced the league is over-hyped because of all that cash. Greenwood may look dazzling now but how will he look against better players and in better leagues. Then again, if Messi is really the measure, all he will need to do is continue the razzle dazzle at the Club level…beyond that, he probably wan’t have to do too much and given the track record of England on the world stage form since like forever, we do know how the Greenwood story is likely to evolve!
